Over the past week, Freethinkers have grieved over the loss of life in the World Trade Center. We watched the religious outpouring on television, in our nation and in our schools. It saddens us that Freethinkers were so rarely included in this grieving process. Over 300 freethinkers died in this tragedy.
While Kay Syvrud hopes that in their deaths in the World Trade Center atheists found God. We are gratified that so many people escaped with their lives.
Peter Brody has warned our country for years that freethinkers and other assorted stinkers are contributing to our moral decline. Blaming us, he uses this tragedy as a way to promote his own beliefs. We hope that our leaders look to the evidence to find who committed this terrible act and that they find effective ways to prevent such loss of life in the future.
Ted Blaney calls us social misfits, intellectual midgets, disgusting, nuts and claims we believe “In Satan We Trust”.
It appalls us that in the midst of this tragedy, while we grieve for our nations losses and look with concern to our future, we are treated to such bigotry by our community. You deny our history, you ignore our contributions and even in our deaths we are dishonored.
We asked the City Council to remove the 10 Commandment Monument as a way to demonstrate that all, Christian and non-Christian, are a welcome part of our community. It was a way to combat the bigotry that is present in this community.
We aren’t welcome here. Too often, people don’t even consider us Americans.
