Affirmation of Reason
By Tom Ebacher
Reason, let me see your hand in all that surrounds me.
The history of a pebble by the shore spewed
forth,
from the bowels of the earth, torn from the rock by the ice
in the great ages then shaped by a raindrop on it's journey
to the sea. Help me see you in the chain of life that
starts with the simplest of your creatures. A string of
algae floating on the water supporting the life of a fish
who nourishes the eagle. I feel awe as I see the tree grow
from a seed until it towers above me in it 's full majesty,
I see your strong hand in the purposeful action of the
squirrel collecting acorns on the forest floor, the caring
of a cat licking her kitten clean and the movement of the
snail retreating back into the shell you have made. They do
these things for you. Thank you for the ability you have
given me to understand your ways. For being able to feel
awe and wonder when I see your hand guiding each, part of my
world. For the joy I find in living my life in this your
web of fife. These also are your creations.
Let me use
your gift of understanding to form my own creations. The
towering building in the midst of the city; our
social
constructions of government, religion, families; and the
harmony of my machines. They are a tribute to you. Let me
see how your hand holds my tools. Help me be tolerant and
understand the actions of my fellows for they hold you
dear. Help me show them your ways. I thank you for the
knowledge you have let me ferret out. It is held in
high honor because it is glimpses into your mysteries.
Let me view you in fullness from the records you keep.
Show me when I am wrong for there is much I misunderstand,
Let me use my knowledge of you in ways that are harmless to
the diversity of your creations. I hear you calling me when
I see your mysteries. You cause me to wonder at the form
and purpose of each of your awesome creations. You have
always been here and your hand is in everything. All
life follows your ways and reflects your image in this
mystery we call time and space.
I proclaim your goodness,
I trust that always there will be Reason.
